Kamalpreet Kaur has qualified for the Discus throw finals in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. She performed spectacular throws to finish as the number 2 qualifier in the event on July 31, 2021. The 25-year-old Punjabi athlete competed in qualification B. Taking a look at her three throws, Kaur’s first throw was of 60.29 m. She tremendously improved the distance in the second throw, as it was of 63.97 m. Afterwards, in her third and final throw, she passed the automatic qualification mark of 64 m by a throw of exact 64 m.
Therefore, Kaur has become the only Indian woman to qualify for the Women’s discus throw final event at the Tokyo Olympics. Another Indian athlete, Seema Punia is eliminated from the Women’s discus throw as her best throw among the three was 60.57 m.
Only two athletes including Kamalpreet Kaur have entered through automatic qualification. Valarie Allman of USA finished first because of her throw of 66.42 m. Apart from Kaur and Valarie, the best throw delivering 12 athletes from both Group A and Group B will qualify for the final.
The defending gold-medallist of Croatia, Sandra Perkovic’s throw was of 63.75 m. While the current world champion, Cuba’s Yaime Perez’s throw stands at 63.18 m. Kamalpreet has wonderfully outclassed the champions.

Chief minister of Punjab, Capt. Amarinder Singh tweeted, ‘You are already a champion athelete Kamalpreet Kaur. I am sure your hard work will get India the first ever medal in athletics at Olympics. Go for the Gold Medal in the finals. God bless you beta.’
The final will be played on 2nd August, 2021.
