Muharram is believed to be the second holiest month in Islam after Ramzan. It will mark the beginning of the first month of the Islamic year, also known as the Hijri calendar. In the Islamic faith, the last prophet that appeared amongst humankind is Prophet Mohammad. The last prophet declared the month of Muharram as the ‘sacred month of Allah’. Muharram 2021 Date and the New Hijri Calendar
Muharram means ‘forbidden’, during this period Muslims around the globe pray and fast. Moreover, Muslims avoid taking part in joyful occasions. There is a custom to read Ziarat Ashura. It is a book that has salutations to the martyrs of Karbala, those who lost their lives on the tenth day, Ashura. Since Muharram also characterises the anniversary of the battle of Karbala. In this, the last Islamic prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussain Ibn Ali was executed. On that account, people remember the massacre on the tenth day. Some of them also fast on that day.
This year the first month of the Islamic year or the Hijri calendar will begin in the second week of August. The first month of Hijri commences with the holy occasion of Muharram. The last month of the Islamic calendar is Dhul al-Hijjah. Furthermore, the solar dating based Gregorian calendar has only 11 days more than the Islamic calendar.
According to a media report, religious authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, and some Middle Eastern regions will decide the starting date of Muharram. However, Muharram 2021 date is probably 10th August, on the Tuesday of the second week. Since the date depends on the sighting of the moon, Muharram can fall on 11th August, given the moon is not sighted.
