Maradona: Birthday of Football’s Golden Boy
To commemorate the legend on his birth anniversary, Argentina Professional League announced that it will pay a tribute to the football legend in all its fixtures on October 30.
In order to pay homage, the league announced that there will be a halt on the 10th minute of every game played today. The matches will stop at the 10th minute and the fans will be allowed to applause for a minute till the game is halted.
The players will be wearing light blue and white armbands with number 10 in memory of the football legend.
Spanish club Barcelona will play Argentine giant Boca Juniors in a December tribute match to mark the one year-anniversary of the death of Maradona. “FC Barcelona and Club Atletico Boca Juniors will play the ‘Maradona Cup’ on December 14, a game to pay tribute to the star Diego Armando Maradona when the first anniversary of his death is remembered,” Barcelona said in a statement.
Nearly a year after Diego Maradona’s death, the first episode of a biographical series about his life, Maradona: Blessed Dream, aired on Argentinean TV following a premiere at the Argentinos Juniors Stadium, the venue where the legend began his professional career in the mid-1970s.
The biopic had also been endorsed by Maradona himself before his death. The Biopic can be seen on amazon prime.
However, the biopic has been criticized as it does not offer a condescending look at his life, according to its makers.
Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona was born on 30th October 1960 in Argentina. He is often regarded as the greatest football player in the history of the sport.
He played from Argentine team from 1977 to 1994. He helped Argentina get its hands on the 1986 FIFA World cup under his captaincy. He also won The Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player in the same world cup.
He was known for his vision, passing, ball control, and dribbling skills. All this combined with his small stature gave him a low centre of gravity allowing him to manoeuvre better than most other players.
Diego Maradona’s life has been foiled with controversy. The controversies ranged from his bans in 1994 due to drug abuse to his unpenalized handling foul known as the “Hand of God”. He was considered to have a playful personality outside of the field as well.
The Football star passed away last year at the age of 60 on 25th November 2020.

Maradona made his junior football debut at the age of just 15 and made his senior debut at the age of 16. A young Diego Maradona, making waves in Argentina at the age of 18, was understandably one of the key players in the Argentina team for the 1979 World Youth Championships.

Maradona, playing for the modest Argentinos Juniors, was gaining a name and popularity rapidly. But Boca Juniors was the powerhouse club in Argentina and Buenos Aires. Later, Boca Juniors promptly went on to sign him for $4 million in 1981.
After a memorable season at Boca and a World Cup campaign that embellished his reputation, Maradona was unsurprisingly signed by Barcelona for a then world record fee of $7.6 million.
While gaining momentum in his sports career, Maradona set several records.
The Argentine footballer has scored 312 goals in his entire career. He has recorded 8 goals and provided 8 assists in 21 World Cup appearances. Maradona was the second highest goal-scorer from Argentina in World Cup finals. Post-retirement from football, he won FIFA Player of the Century award.
