India is globally hailed among the category of developing nations but what really seems to be contradictory is the fact most of the girl child in the country is beset with challenges and problems right from her birth and no nation cannot progress until it’s girl child are deprived and lagging behind. Therefore, to raise awareness and safeguard the rights of a girl child, India celebrates National Girl Child Day on 24th January
History of National Girl Child Day
The history of National Girl Day dates back to 2008 when 24th January was earmarked as the day for the celebration of the girl child in by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The sole objective of this day is to create consciousness among countrymen and to break the orthodox chain of subjugation, exploitation and inequality that a girl child has been facing since ages.
Why is this day celebrated?
National Girl Child Day is dedicated to every girl child in India who has been the harmless target of the social evils that ruins their prospect. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, this day is meant to celebrate the girl child, to create mass awareness about their rights and opportunities, to support them, to help them and to be their spokesperson.
National Girl Child Day 2022
Every year, this day is celebrated with zeal and passion and this year is no exception. So in the year 2022, as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Culture will be organising ‘Umang Rangoli’ where the participant teams will make beautiful Rangoli decorations at 50 special locations across the country. Also, Prime Minister Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually interact with Rashtriya Bal Puraskar awardees.
The award recipients, along with their parents and concerned district magistrate of their respective district, would be a part of the event from their district headquarters.
Theme of National Girl Child Day 2022
This day is celebrated in a very interesting way and are based on different themes which underlines and highlights the challenges of a girl child. In 2019, the theme was ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow’. It was ‘My voice, our common future’ in 2020. In 2021, the theme for National Girl Child Day was ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation. This year’s theme is also going to be different however it has not been released yet.
Steps taken by government in this initiative
The government has been working towards the upliftment and welfare of the girl child. Many programmes and initiatives have been launched by the government which can be seen as a stepping stone towards the betterment of the girl child. Some of the projects launched by the government are Save the Girl Child, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna, CBSE Udaan Scheme. To ensure a girl child’s right to education, the government has subsidized education for them so that poverty does not stand in their way of progress. These programmes and projects have proved successful to a great extent and has saved a girl from bearing the brunt of society.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development’s response
On this occasion, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani urged to ‘Educate, Encourage, Empower!’ girls. “Today is the day to renew our commitment twd providing equal opportunities to our girls. On National Girl Child Day, as we celebrate accomplishments of our daughters, we pledge to bridge the gender divide to build an inclusive & equal society,” Smriti Irani tweeted. Also, she posted a selfie with her daughters and stated, “Kind, fierce, determined, confident, passionate and so on … This is how I describe my daughters who are the reason for immense pride, joy and laughter in our household. On National Girl Child Day, appreciate a #BetiBharatKi and encourage her by celebrating her achievements”
