Oral health with Dr. Nikita

My parents are doctors, and I always wanted to do something in the healthcare field. Initially I wanted to pursue MBBS, but then I switched to dentistry.

While I was studying, at 22, I was diagnosed with Auto-immune Kidney Disease. I was put on medication, and I gained 20 kilograms within a year due to the medication. I was in a rough state of mind as I was struggling to regain my self-confidence. It is a life-long disease, and I am still putting on weight. But I have realized that gaining weight isn’t a problem as long as you are healthy. It doesn’t matter what you look like, but it’s all about what you can accomplish in life. So, I worked really hard and stood 1st in my university in my masters. With the help of my family and friends, I developed a positive approach to my disease.

I started my private dental clinic in Santacruz West in 2017.This year, I’ve finally managed to overcome my doubts of being in front of the camera, and have started a series of videos in which I give certain tips and tricks which can help prevent dental disease and make dentistry more patient friendly. #toothythursday

During this lockdown period, dentists have the highest risk of contracting the coronavirus as we work very close to the mouth. I always wanted to help people, so even though I have a medical condition, I would rush to my clinic if my patient had a dental emergency despite any situation.

A typical myth when it comes to your teeth is that teeth yellow because of age alone, that is not the case. It has a lot to do with your habits, your food and drinks intake and genetics. But now, with in-office teeth whitening, you don’t have to settle for yellow teeth. Another myth is that dental treatment is not allowed in pregnancy. And the most common, is the myth that dental treatment hurts. That is a thing of the past.

As a dentist, I want people to understand that a dental check-up is a must every six months, irrespective of whether you have a toothache or not. Prevention is always better than cure and your smile is the first thing that people notice, so it’s very important to keep it healthy and beautiful.
