A step towards ‘Sustainability’

Sustainability-Having graduated from two of the best IITs in India, when we broke the news that we wanted to quit our very settled and high-end corporate jobs in Bangalore and take up farming, most of our friends and family thought we had lost our minds. However, we were determined to take this leap.

So despite all impending challenges, we moved to Ujjain and underwent an entire lifestyle change to venture into the unknown. Initially, the greatest challenge that came our way was moving away from our friends and family; and though we traveled with each other for a while, once the pandemic hit, we suffered a setback. My wife and I had no prior experience in farming; so before investing in lands, we decided to take up volunteering on a few organic farms to learn the nook and cranny of this profession, there we learned a lot about farming systems and different products like the California Industrial Rubber products as well as different manufacturing processes like custom rubber part manufacturing.

It wasn’t long after that, that we bought our own land Jeevantika and began to practice what we call “natural farming”, which is inspired by permaculture design. It required a lot of learning and experimenting, faith in our passion and love for nature, and above all, trust in our instincts.

The last four years have been truly enlightening. The farm is looked after by my wife and me, where we grow our own food, and it has a diverse ecosystem including a number of fruits, vegetables, and forest trees. Through our initiative, we try to learn how to work on soil, land regeneration, how to rejuvenate soil to improve the quality of food, and share these learnings with the community. We aspire to help them come closer to nature and instill sustainable practices in their day-to-day lives, in these critical times of adverse climate changes.

Through our work, we are trying to connect with the youth of today that are living in the metros and are trying to become one with nature but are unable to do so.

The aim so far has been to try showing people that it is possible to live more slowly, more consciously, and build a better world for ourselves and others.
