23rd July observes the birth anniversaries of two heroic freedom fighters of India. The nation celebrates Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Chandra Shekhar Azad today. Azad has participated in a series of revolutionary events in his life. Attacking the oppressive British regime, he had vowed of remaining free and not to be limited at the hands of colonial rule.
Chandra Shekhar Azad pledged to live his life by being ‘Azad’. He died in 1931 on 27th February. When he got betrayed by an ally, the police surrounded him at Alfred Park. Moreover, Azad single-handedly fought with a small-sized pistol and some cartridges. At the time when he was left with only one bullet, he shot himself. The freedom fighter greeted death rather than getting arrested.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, ‘Remembering the valiant son of Bharat Mata, the remarkable Chandra Shekhar Azad on his Jayanti. During the prime of his youth he immersed himself in freeing India from the clutches of imperialism. He was also a futuristic thinker, and dreamt of a strong and just India.’
The Prime Minister further remembered Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He posted on the microblogging site, ‘I bow to the great Lokmanya Tilak on his Jayanti. His thoughts and principles are more relevant than ever before in the present circumstances, when 130 crore Indians have decided to build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat that is economically prosperous and socially progressive.’ He added, ‘Lokmanya Tilak was a firm believer in Indian values and ethos. His views on subjects such as education and women empowerment continue to motivate several people. He was an institution builder, nurturing many top-quality institutions which have done pioneering work over the years.’
