Legendary thespian Dilip Kumar died at the age of 98 at the Hinduja hospital, Khar, Mumbai. Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, he was a cinematic icon and had a career that spanned almost five decades. Earlier in June, he was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion. Because of the diagnosis, he was on oxygen support. The veteran actor was having health issues for the past few months.

Kumar was famously known as the ‘Tragedy King of Bollywood’ because he was famous for his tragic roles in movies. Dilip Kumar had previously admitted that working in films of the tragedy genre deeply affected his mental health. However, he was a method actor. Therefore, he acted in diverse genres. Dilip Saab has done dramas, comedies, romance, among others. Devdas, Madhumati, Aan, Azaad, Daag, Gunga Jamuna, Kranti, Karma, Ram Aur Shyam and Mughal-e-Azam are his prominent films. He last appeared in the 1998 film ‘Qila’.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana penned a heartfelt note to the late actor, ‘”Meri dadi ko nahut pyaar tha Dilip sahab se. She impersonated him in her 60s. She used to secretly take her sons for his films screenings, because my grandfather detested cinema. Because of this strong influence, my father has been an ardent worshipper of him since his infanthood. In our household Dilip kumar is no less than God. Dilip Kumar’s burial began at 5 p.m. The funeral proceedings were done with full state honours.
