Happy Eid ul-Adha! It is the second biggest festival celebrated in Islam. The Arabic word ‘Eid ul-Adha’ means ‘Festival of Sacrifice’ in English. Since this year, the festival is observed on July 21 in India, people all over the country are celebrating it. Bakrid is generally observed on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah which is the Islamic calendar’s twelfth month Eid al-Adha. It is also considered the month of pilgrimage for followers of Islam across the globe.
Moreover, the festival notifies the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, a yearly event in Islam. It is known as Eid Qurban or Qurban Bayarami. A popular organization of Islamic scholars, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind stated that the crescent moon for Dhu al-Hijjah was seen on July 11. Most importantly, it is considered as the beginning of Bakri Eid.

Eid ul-Adha has a divine historical meaning attached to it. The festival commemorates the will of Ibrahim (or Abraham), showing his dedication to God. Looking at Ibrahim’s will to sacrifice his son Ishmael, Allah sent a lamb, so that Ishmael could be saved. Therefore, Bakri Eid is celebrated in memory of the event.
