International Youth Day: What’s The Theme Of This Year?

International Youth Day: Theme, history and significance

Every year International Youth Day is observed on 12th August. The name itself tells about the nature of the event. It celebrates active participation, contribution and the other roles played by the youth population across the globe.

History and Significance of International Youth Day

For the first time, this day was celebrated in 1999. The World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth came up with the idea of a day meant for youth in the UN General Assembly, Lisbon. Consequently, this day includes several competitions, seminars and educational campaigns having political, cultural, and economic aspects for youth. The main purpose is to impart knowledge of the event among people.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says, “Young people are on the frontlines of the struggle to build a better future for all. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the dire need for the kind of transformational change they seek – and young people must be full partners in that effort.”

The day has a particular theme attached to it. So, this year’s theme is “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.’ This theme is decided by the UN at ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council) Youth Forum (EYF) 2021. It highlights the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environment, human health as well as food systems.

UNESCO states that, ”Youth Programme emphasizes in its work that youth are not just beneficiaries, but they are essential leaders and partners in finding solutions to the issues faced by young people in the world today.”

Today the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the people. According to UN Biodiversity, ‘”I urge everyone to guarantee young people a seat at the table.” In his message for #YouthDay on 12 August, @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres highlights the vital contributions of those on the frontlines of the struggle to build a better future for all — youth.”

Rightly said by Barack Obama, ‘Young people recognize the big challenges that are coming up.

Celebrate the youth today!
