Lalaine Vellakat: Jeweling unconventionally

Interview

Questions and answers

What inspiration was drawn behind to keep 'Le Rustique' the name?

The journey started off with the word Rustic, as it was an unconventional jewellery line. Whilst on a long-distance call and discussing plans, the name
sprang. Rustique sounded much posh and better than Rustic. Later, the French connection kicked in and just the other moment, we had “Le Rustique”. Rustique or Rustic denotes simplicity and charm.

After working for 13 years in a corporate field, what differences did you feel when you tried to fit in the entrepreneurial world?

With my vast experience in administration and managerial skills, I was well equipped to take on any role. Being a solopreneur gave me an edge to be my own boss, to be accountable for all my actions; successes and failures. However, not having any experience in Sales and Marketing – which is pivotal for a business – deflated the business a bit. I believe I still have a lot to learn.

What intrigued you the most about making jewellery after enrolling yourself in the jewellery making class?

The outcome of coiling, wire wrapping and forging such simplistic yet one of-a-kind pieces got me going to pursue this skill further. With an aesthetic to creativity and handcrafts, I wished to bring forth the jewellery line to the “Spirited She”.

What were some of the initial setbacks you had faced at the beginning of your journey?

Wires: It was about understanding the gauge, weight and characteristics of different kinds of metals. A trial and error on what works well.
Sourcing: A considerable amount of time was spent on researching and sourcing, not all elements, which were sourced, proved their fit in the collection, resulting in unused stock. With no budget in mind at the start of the venture, the expenses were more than the income.

What are the different kinds of jewelry made in Le Rustique and which is the most selling ornament?

Our designs never go out of fashion. And with that thought in mind, we create the one of a kind Necklaces. Each neckpiece is unique and there is something special for everyone. The fastest-selling collection was the exclusive Stella neckpieces with natural stones.

What newer domains are you planning to explore for Le Rustique?

With the launch of the website, I would like to bring on board; solopreneurs, small businesses who do not have an online space. The ultimate goal would be to support the smaller NGO’s who work with local artisans, mentor them and give them a voice.
