' Lata Mangeshkar tests COVID positive’

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar tested COVID positive and was taken to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital this past Saturday. As per the health reports shared on Wednesday, she still continues to be under medical observation.

Health Update

The 92 year old singer is stable and doing fine. She had mild symptoms of COVID and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Breach Candy Hospital due to her advanced age. Pratit Samdhani who is currently in-charge of her treatment said, “Singer Lata Mangeshkar continues to be in the ICU ward. She will be under observation for 10-12 days. Along with Covid, she is also suffering from pneumonia”

On Tuesday evening, Mangeshkar’s niece Rachna Shah while speaking to News 18  shared her health update: “Didi is absolutely stable and is alert. God has been really kind. She is a fighter and a winner and that is how we have known her for so many years. I would like to thank all the fans across the nation who have kept her in the prayers. We can see when everyone prays, nothing can go wrong”. She also added that she is being looked after by the best team of doctors while making a humble request for family’s privacy at this hour.

Prayers from all over the country

Ever since the singer was admitted to hospital, prayers for her speedy recovery has gained momentum. Everyone from her fans to leading personalities, all have been enquiring after her health. Twitter also remained flooded with tweets praying and wishing for her health.

Response from prominent personalities

 A wave of response and concern for Lata Mangeshkar has also been seen from the side of notable personalities. In a tweet, Mamata Banerjee, the CM of West Bengal shared her thoughts and prayed for her speedy recovery. Union Minister, Prakash Javdekar said, “Get well soon, Lata Mangeshkar-ji. Whole country is praying for your good health.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too enquired after her health.

Famous filmmaker Madhur  Bhandarkar paid a visit to the singer at the hospital and shared the health update on Instagram and posted a throwback picture of Lata Mangeshkar. He wrote,“Visited the Hospital to see @mangeshkarlata didi glad to inform that she is stable and responding positively to the treatment. Thanks everyone for countless blessings & prayers for her speedy recovery.”

Nightingale of India

Mangeshkar is widely known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, for her diversified talent and melodious voice. She began her career at the young age of 13 in 1942 and has recorded songs in more than 1,000 films in several languages. She also has her name registered in the, ‘Guiness Book of World Records’ for recording maximum number of songs between 1974 and 1991.

80 years of Debut on Radio

Last month itself, Lata Mangeshkar took to her Twitter handle to mark 80 years of her debut on radio. Sharing a black and white photo of her young age, she wrote, “On 16th December 1941, with the blessings of God, Pujya Mai and Baba, I sang two songs for the first time in the studio for radio.” She also thanked her admirers for their immense love and support as she stated, “Today this thing is completing 80 years. In these 80 years, I have got immense love and blessings of the people, I am sure that I will always get your love, blessings like this.”

Awards and Recognitions

  Lata Mangeshkar has won National Film Award, BFJA Award, Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, Filmfare Special Award, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. Apart from these, she was also honored with Padma Bhushan (1969), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan (1997), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001), Legion of Honor (2007).  She has also been a member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from November 22, 1999 to November 21, 2005.
