Here’s to the undying spirit of doctors. The peope who are providing services during this period of crisis. Let’s celebrate National Doctors’ Day 2021.

History of National Doctors’ Day

Every year, India observes National Doctors’ Day on July 1. This date marks the birth and death anniversary of an eminent physician, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. In addition to being a physician, he was also the second chief minister of Bengal.

To honour his legacy, the Government of India maintains Doctors’ Day since 1991. Furthermore, he played a prominent role in the formation of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Medical Council of India.

In short, this day commemorates doctors. Along with the Herculean contributions of the medical community.

Doctors’ Day Celebrations All Around the World

We know that the Indian government recognizes Doctors’ Day. Likewise, countries across the globe also honour doctors. However, the dates differ from place to place. For example, it is celebrated in the United States of America on March 30. Secondly, Iran observes it on August 23. Similarly, Cuba celebrates doctors on December 3. But it started way back in Georgia (USA) in March 1933.

Most importantly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the contributions of Dr BC Roy. Moreover, during his Mann Ki Baat address, he says, ‘A few days from now, on July 1, we will celebrate National Doctors’ Day. This day is dedicated to the birth anniversary of the great doctor and statesman of the country, Dr BC Roy. We are all grateful for the contribution of doctors during the Corona period. Our doctors have served us without caring about their lives. Therefore, this time National Doctors’ Day becomes even more special’.

Further, PM’s tweet reads, ‘India is proud of the efforts of all doctors in fighting COVID-19. 1st July is marked as National Doctors Day. At 3 PM tomorrow, will address the doctors community at a programme organised by @IMAIndiaOrg‘. 

That is to say, this tweet comes before his special address. A programme dedicated to the medical community.

Significance of This Day

At a time when the country’s healthcare was in shambles. The persons in white coats lent their hands. Above all, when we talk about a country like India, for instance. Here COVID-19 battered the economy. Furthermore, exposing the crippling public healthcare system. Therefore, doctors left no stones unturned during their healthcare services. Many of them martyred while being on duty. All of them must have suffered the pandemic’s trauma. We can only wonder what keeps them going during these difficult times. Perhaps, a sense of humanity. Certainly, a feeling of responsibility to the nation.

On this day, let’s honour the legacy of those who are standing between the highly contagious virus and us.
