Mugdha Rahatekar: Life Reloaded
Nisha and Neelam Kushwaha-We come from a family where my grandmother and mother used to make handmade products. They used to convert the waste material and other stuff into a completely new product which I deeply admired because the process was very gripping. We were always intrigued to know what new products they would come up with.
Residing in different cities because of my father’s job gave us exposure to different art and culture. We interacted with different people in different cities and in the process, learned a lot about clothing and other styles. Coming from a family which upheld handmade products made us understand the importance of handloom sarees. Apparently, we both admired this niche but somewhere we were afraid that it wouldn’t work out. Leaving our comfort zone and stepping into business took a lot of courage. Luckily, we are blessed with the best family and friends who always motivated us. Thus, we rambled door to door in the search of weavers who were still into handloom products. This was time taking and effortful, there were days when we felt like giving up. But, after successfully getting in touch with some of them, we displayed our designs to them and they did the same. Surprisingly, we started getting orders in the first two months which was very heartening. We are planning to bring a new line of categories, which will include organic dying and printing.
Now when I look back, I can proudly say that we have been working hard and so far, it’s been very rewarding. The bond we share with our customers and weavers is estimable. The tingle I have in my heart every time I look back makes me proud of the decision I made years ago.
