Though many of you in this year’s cohort will undoubtedly be dealing with upset and disappointment when it comes to your results, and university offers, there is hope on the horizon. Speak with UCAS directly about securing yourself a place at university, and above all, about securing yourself a future. No matter your reasons for choosing to seek a university place through clearing, it is of the utmost importance that you have no offers from universities otherwise outstanding. This includes both ‘firm’ and ‘insurance’ choices, regardless as to whether or not you’ve achieved the grades required. Unwanted places must be declined through UCAS directly — reporting to a university directly that you wish to decline their offer, and failing to do so through UCAS, will mean you are ineligible to apply for places through clearing.

What is Clearing?

Normally, meeting these conditions involves achieving certain examination results and where examinations are going ahead as planned, we expect these conditions to be met. UCAS Clearing 2022

The Ucas customer service centre in Cheltenham deals with calls from students dealing with the clearing process in their university applications. 4,245 conditional unconditional offers were picked up for the 2022 cycle. Around 1,445 of these offers were initially conditional with the offer to convert to unconditional if the applicant chooses them as their firm choice. Around 2,800 were initially conditional, with the offer to convert to unconditional if the applicant chooses them as either their firm or insurance choice. 55 conditional unconditional offers were picked up for the 2022 cycle.

Your personal consultant will go through the Clearing list with you, discussingsubject optionsand university locations. If you haven’t applied yet, there is still time to submit your application between July and October. A-Levelresults day and beginning the Clearing process can be extremely stressful, so make sure you begin your research on other possible outcomes before the big day arrives. Being prepared for all possible eventualities will help you make decisions with a clearer head once the Clearing process begins. Once submitted, you’ll be invited to use the UCAS Hub service and be given a Clearing number – this will be displayed under your ‘Application status’.

Knowing which unis are the easiest to get into could help you focus your search for a place in Clearing. My advice would be to make sure you have a set plan in your mind before results day about what you want to do if you don’t get your place. No one really prepared me to think about what I would do if I didn’t get into any of my chosen unis. Even if you wait until results day to decide whether you need to apply through Clearing, you should still spend some time preparing for it, just in case. You may be tempted to apply through Clearing before results day if you think your exams went badly, but we’d advise against it. Each year, tens of thousands of students get uni places through Clearing.

Gary Davies, pro vice-chancellor at London Metropolitan, said that last year over 60% of the students his university recruited during clearing did not apply during the main admissions cycle. Many applied directly to the university, bypassing the Ucas process entirely. “Higher education has traditionally been a port in a storm during a recession, because people think if there aren’t jobs around, let’s go to uni,” said Davies. Experts warned that the late application surge, cancelled gap years and few deferrals could lead to an especially chaotic day for school-leavers when they receive their A-level results. There could be fierce competition for places if English results mirror the downgraded results in Scottish highers, meaning students could fall short of their university offer conditions. Some candidates who receive conditional offers will have already completed school or college leaving qualifications and met the conditions.

If you are worried about missing out on a place at university because you do not meet your conditional offer then you may still be able to get a place at Oxford Brookes through Clearing. The deadline for 2021 applications to Oxford and Cambridge, and most courses in medicine, veterinary medicine/science and dentistry. Preparing is what helped 20-year-old Megan Murphy secure a place at the University of Bedfordshire after realising she couldn’t afford the living costs at her first choice in central London. “Clearing is a stressful time for any student, but my experience was made a lot easier through regular talks with Uni of Bedfordshire staff on the phone and by email,” she says.

In this case, once you have completed all the necessary administrative steps to provide your college with the evidence required, your place will become unconditional and be confirmed. It is likely to be especially popular this year as school-leavers are looking to avoid entering the job market during the coronavirus economic downturn. Several universities, including Leeds Beckett and London Metropolitan, said they are seeing an increase in applications directly to their university from students who already have A-levels. Any student who does not meet the requirements for their chosen university will undoubtedly experience disappointment, and sorrow, in the extreme. These students can take comfort, however, in knowing there is a contingency in place, via UCAS, that could still secure their future — even if that future leads in a different direction to what they had initially envisaged. As well as applying for the first time or if they’ve missed their grades, students use clearing to change course or university – and experts are expecting lots of switching to happen on 13 August.

But, there’s no point in rushing into a course or uni which isn’t right for you. If you’re eligible for Clearing, you should see an ‘Add Clearing choice’ button on your UCAS Track Choices screen. If you’ve missed your grades but don’t see this option, give your unis a call. Candidates commencing training on other psychological professions’ courses after 1st April 2022 typically will need to wait until two years post qualification from that course to be eligible to commence this training programme. You will need to complete an IELTS test, scoring at higher level (7.5), before applying to the training programme.
