Surekha Sikri passes away

Surekha Sikri is a well-known name in Indian theatre. Not only in the theatre, but she has also performed in various films and TV programmes. Sikri suffered a cardiac arrest in the early morning hours today, post which she breathed her last. The 75-year-old actress was dealing with several health issues lately. Moreover, her health had been deteriorating because of brain strokes.

According to her manager, “Three-time national award winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke. She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. The family asks for privacy at this time. Om Sai Ram.”

The Contributions of Surekha Sikri

Sikri is a three-time national award winning artist. She started her journey in the film industry with her debut in 1978. Her debut film is ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’. She went on to win one of the most prestigious recognition – the National Film Awards. Therefore, Surekha Sikri was honoured for her outstanding performances with three National Film Awards. Firstly, for the film ‘Tamas’ in 1988, secondly, for ‘Mammo’ in 1995 and finally for her role in ‘Badhaai Ho’. She played the role of Dadi in the 2018 film ‘Badhaai Ho’.

However, she gained eminence with the TV show ‘Balika Vadhu’. The character of ‘Dadi Sa’ is unforgettable. Her latest appearance is in ‘Ghost Stories’. The Netflix anthology is directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Manoj Bajpayee tweeted, “Very Sad news !!! One of the greatest talent Surekha Sikari ji passed away leaving behind so many great performances in theatre and cinema!! She was a treat to watch on stage.can’t forget some of those memories of her act in theatre.great craft and a graceful person!! RIP”.

‘Badhaai Ho’ actor Sanya Malhotra shared a video clip of the late actress in her Instagram stories. She is seen reciting Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat. Sanya further writes ‘RIP’. 

Surekha ji will continue to inspire us with her works. Rest in peace, ma’am.
